Chronic migraines are defined as having 15 or more headache days per month for at least three months, with each episode lasting between 4-72 hours.

Warning Symptoms Of Chronic Migraine

Migraines can be preceded by warning signs, known as auras, which can occur up to an hour before the onset of the headache. Auras can include visual disturbances such as seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, nausea, tinnitus, and dizziness, as well as sensory disturbances such as tingling or numbness in the face or limbs. Some people may also experience difficulty speaking or confusion. There is also something called the “late-life migraine accompaniment” which is a type of neurological episode that may not even include a headache. Our team of Jefferson City migraine treatment specialists will help you identify your unique symptom patterns and which treatments are best for you.

GENETICS & ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS PLAY A ROLE IN MIGRAINE

While the exact cause of migraines is still unknown, there are several genetic and environmental factors linked to their development. Some of these changes involve the brainstem and/or trigeminal nerve, which may alter levels of certain neuropeptides like CGRP or other brain chemicals like serotonin. Imbalances in brain chemistry may be linked with migraine episodes or the worsening of symptoms.

WHAT FACTORS TRIGGER YOUR MIGRAINE?

Here at our Jefferson City migraine treatment clinic, we aim to get the root cause of your symptoms. There are dozens of different potential triggers that may precipitate an episode. Chemical exposure, hormonal imbalances, stress, sleep disturbances, and certain foods and drinks are among the most common causes of chronic migraines. Other contributing factors include environmental factors such as weather changes, loud noises, and bright lights. There is also a role of the gut microbiome, with gut-related immune and neurotransmitter activity, in moderating migraine episodes.

WE DISCOVER THE ROOT CAUSES OF YOUR MIGRAINE

Our Jefferson City, MO neurology clinic takes a comprehensive approach to treating migraines, using a science-based framework called “systems biology.” This approach includes the Functional Medicine Operating System, which helps us uncover the root causes of these conditions. To investigate the seven main nodes that contribute to underlying imbalances, we use the Functional Medicine Matrix and Timeline, along with Therapeutic Lifestyle Factors. The seven nodes are: Integrity, Energy, Communication, Assimilation, Transport, Defense & Repair, and Biotransformation & Elimination. Thanks to this approach, our team of Jefferson City neurologists can guide patients in correcting imbalances contributing to migraines.

Contact us today if you need migraine, cluster, or tension headache relief in Jefferson City. We are committed to offering comprehensive and compassionate care, tailoring our treatments to address your unique needs and help you find lasting relief from debilitating headaches.

My program accepts out-of-state patients. Brain Tune Up! is a 5-8 month program. In order to be accepted into my program my team and I have to see you for the two-day initial neurological evaluation in-person, but we then can customize the rest of the program in a virtual setting for patients who are traveling from far distances. This will be explained when you schedule a telephone consultation.
