Did you know that the health of your neurology is intimately connected to the overall health of your body? It’s true! That’s why at Sharlin Health and Neurology, we work hard to provide our patients with the highest level of care possible. If you’re not already a patient here, we encourage you to come in and see what we can do for you. You won’t be disappointed!
Now we’ve identified, what is next?
Making the right diagnosis is crucial. Our patients want to understand why they have the problem in the first place and how we plan to address it. But we need to start by figuring out what the problem is. This has been talked about in a previous post about our first pillar: IDENTIFY
Too often, people come to us either not knowing exactly what the explanation is for the problem or the set of problems they’re experiencing. To name a few, there could be numbness, weakness, brain fog, balance issues, and so forth. Or it could also be that they have a diagnosis, but the diagnosis is not correct. Therefore, before we take a deep dive into all those root causes, which are part of functional medicine, we have to identify what the problem is.
The next pillar is INVESTIGATE. That’s when the fun begins for our patients.
Let’s answer: How did this happen?
If you have Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, or Multiple Sclerosis, you might want to know how you got it.
“How did this happen to me?”
“Why do I have this condition?”
“This is not the direction I thought my life was going to go in.”
Certainly, anyone would ask these questions. But let’s think about what usually happens at a neurology clinic.
Ultimately, once a diagnosis is made, most neurologists will focus on the diagnosis. The thought process usually is: forget the person, focus on the disease, and assign a drug to the disease.
If you have MS (Multiple Sclerosis), you go on an MS drug. For Alzheimer’s, you go on an
Alzheimer’s drug. This will happen with all other diagnosed diseases. In conventional neurology, the human being, the person, you, who has this condition, is frequently left out of the equation.
But that’s not the case in functional medicine.
Investigate – A deep dive
We need to identify the disease. But after that, we need to investigate the problem. Investigate not only involves a very deep dive into understanding the antecedent triggers and mediators of your condition, but it also includes a set of labs that is unique to our Brain Tuneup program. This is where we take the deepest dive with you.
We’re going to look at factors including genetic influences, things that drive chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, and lipid chemistry. Please note that I’m not talking about putting you on a statin-type drug, but it is important to understand that lipid chemistry can play a major role in driving your condition.
We will also look at how well you are controlling your blood sugar. This includes measuring how much insulin you have, not just your blood sugar levels. We’re going to look at hormones, toxins (which include heavy metals and biotoxins), and trace minerals.
When it comes to hormones, the most important ones to consider are cortisol, DHEA sulfate, testosterone, estradiol, progesterone, and the thyroid.
All of these play critical roles in why we get sick and what we’re going to do to help us get better. You need this deep dive into labs, which is not going to happen at a conventional neurology clinic.
What to expect
Just to review, we’re going to sit down with you and talk. I want to know about your family and the circumstances surrounding your mother’s pregnancy and birth. I also want to know about your childhood and adulthood, all the way up until the time you got sick.
Then let’s evaluate the things keeping you on this trajectory: the mediators. These are the many things that affect your health, such as the quality of your sleep, how active you are, what kind of food you eat, how you manage stress, and how you deal with stress.
All of this is packaged together with this deep-dive set of laboratory tests. It is somehow similar to getting a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces are thrown onto the table, but they don’t put themselves together, and they don’t come out of the box necessarily in the right order.
Now that we have a better understanding of what happened, it is important to investigate how this could have occurred. Our INTEGRATE pillar is when we take all of the puzzle pieces we discovered in the INVESTIGATE pillar and help you put them together, create a plan that is unique to you, and ultimately solve the problem.
