The First Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
First Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease Explained by Dr. Ken Sharlin
I’ve been asked, what are some of the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease? And I would say, in general, let’s divide it up into two camps. Unfortunately, there are individuals who have changes in their memory, and they are unaware of these changes. Their family members may become frustrated because they find that the family member or the friend repeats the same questions over, forgets conversations that they may have had, plans that they may have made, calendar events that they may have committed to, and the person may be quite unaware that they’re having this type of difficulty.
But for the person who is becoming aware, or who’s brought to the neurologist and tested, some of the things we typically see, first of all, are changes in short-term memory. Changes in short-term memory definitely precede long-term memory, which is often preserved well into the condition. Other areas would include changes in language. So what does that really mean? Maybe names, you recognize someone you’ve known for a long time but you can’t remember their name. You can’t connect the name and the face. You have trouble even recognizing faces sometimes. Coming up with the right words, or the wrong words come out when you intend to say something, that can be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease.
