ApoE4 Gene
Did you know that 20% to 30% of the world’s population has at least one copy of ApoE4?
One Copy of ApoE4
A person with one copy of the ApoE4 gene has 3-4 times the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease.
Two Copies of ApoE4
A person with two copies of the ApoE4 gene has 15 times the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease.
Let’s look at a few examples. Women who have their ovaries removed surgically prior to menopause, a process called “oophorectomy,” experience an abrupt deficiency of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and a disruption of the part of the brain that is responsible for the biological stress response. Studies have shown that estrogen has a protective effect on the brain. The Mayo Clinic Cohort Study of Oophorectomy and Aging showed an almost doubled risk of dementia in women who underwent removal of both ovaries before menopause. However, women who started Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) after oophorectomy and continued HRT until at least the natural age of menopause did not experience and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Lower Risk of Alzheimer's Disease 30%
We live in an age where the thirst for greater awareness of what we can do to maintain our health is being matched by the information available through the vastness that is the internet. Perhaps this is most timely given the current political and social environment. We have a shortage of healthcare workers, nursing home beds, and a paucity of drug-oriented solutions for the growing epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease despite the billions of dollars spent in research. Our insurance companies and the state and federal coffers cannot bear the burden of what is to come. Any solution must incorporate a plan for prevention. Since women in our society are the primary decision-makers when it comes to healthcare it is a priority to make available the information they need to keep themselves and their families the healthiest possible. Frances had a long and fortunate life by anyone’s measure. Whether she would have been influenced by the current information I can only guess. But it’s fair to say she would have liked to know.
