Fitness means different things to different people, but its positive effect on our biological systems is undeniable. Here at Sharlin Health and Neurology, we believe that fitness is both mental and physical, and that’s why we have created a highly specialized Neuro Fitness program.
Over the past 12 months, the fitness facility has grown and evolved under Director Pamela Hernandez’s leadership and creativity. Today, we are thrilled to offer personal training, yoga, Tai Chi, and other one-on-one and small group classes, as well as virtual training sessions and special events. We welcome patients of Sharlin Health and the general public from Ozark and Springfield, Missouri, and from across the country.
Pamela has done an unbelievable job in creating an intentional, warm, and supportive space that empowers people of all ages and abilities to grow and develop, improve their fitness, and sharpen their brain’s functionality. It may look like a small cross-fit gym, and we have all the expected equipment – free weights, rowers, bikes, bands, and kettlebells. But this is not your average gym. The benefits of neuro fitness are life-changing.
What is Neuro Fitness?
The neurofit system is not like other fitness or physical therapy programs. It’s not reactive, and it’s not rehab. It’s proactive, or, as Pamela likes to call it, prehab. My team prepares you so you might not need physical therapy. Or, if you’ve recently graduated from physical therapy and you’re feeling good but not at peak performance, Neuro Fitness can help you reach the next level.
Neuro Fitness is also ideal for people living with different abilities, such as those with multiple sclerosis, balance issues, or Parkinson’s disease. Often, regular trainers don’t have the required knowledge or experience to work with people who have conditions affecting their nervous systems, but we do. While the equipment we have might make Sharlin Health Neuro Fitness look like one of the high end gyms in your community, it’s not just the equipment that’s important. The type of movements Pamela teaches are modified to meet specific needs of the people who seek the type of fitness we offer.
Some of the benefits of Neuro Fitness are all about training your mind and body so that they work better together. As a result, you perform optimally in your day-to-day, and ultimately, you enjoy an improved quality of life.
What can Neuro Fitness help me achieve?
Our neurofit system is extremely versatile, and Pamela and the team’s approach is tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of each person that sets foot into our facility.
Here are a couple of real-life success stories to give you a better understanding of what we’ve helped people achieve. I’ve changed the patients’ names to protect their privacy.
Jane boosts her learning capacity
Meet Jane. She’s 16 years old and learns differently. She needs to hear instructions a few times before she can complete a task. And like most young adults, she has her learner’s permit.
Pamela recognized that Jane needed to work on her focus and reaction time, and on her ability to learn and retain new information.
After starting her Neuro Fitness program, Jane realized her mind functioned better after exercise. She was able to perform tasks with greater ease and noted improvements in her memory. So, she started coming into the facility for a training session before she began her home school classes.
Betty improves by 75 percent
Betty was referred to my clinic after an early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. During the Neuro Fitness assessment, Betty underwent what’s called the clock turn test. Put simply, the examiner calls out instructions, and the patient turns to face different directions – nine o’clock, three o’clock, and so on. Betty took about 42 seconds to complete the clock turn test.
Betty began aerobic exercise, some light jogging, and strength training. She started taking Critical Brain Support, one of my specially formulated supplements. She worked her body and brain by practicing new and changing movement patterns.
Six months on, Pamela reassessed Betty’s Neuro Fitness. Incredibly, she took just 11 seconds to complete the clock turn test – a significant improvement that surprised my team but didn’t shock Betty. She had already noticed that her mind and body’s functionality had made leaps and bounds.
Poppy defies her own expectations
Poppy has multiple sclerosis. One day, when Poppy was scheduled to see Pamela for a training session in the afternoon, Pamela received a phone call. It was Poppy, and she was ecstatic. Without thinking, she had put on her pants without any trouble.
Sometimes, people with multiple sclerosis have difficulties lifting the leg high enough to put on pants with ease. But after about 12 months of Neuro Fitness training, Poppy was able to do just that. It was such a meaningful achievement that Poppy couldn’t wait to see Pamela later that day – she had to share the news immediately.
What if I’m not fit?
The neurofit system can still be hugely beneficial if you are unfit, disinterested in exercise, self-conscious, or even a little intimidated.
Pamela, who has been working in this area for over a decade, recognizes just how common these concerns and reservations are. Many fitness facilities are designed for people who are already fit, and that isn’t fair. So, we’ve created an intentional space that ensures everyone feels welcome and confident.
That’s not to say this system isn’t challenging – it is. But it shouldn’t be awful. We don’t want you to dread visiting our facility. Instead, we make it fun and accessible, whether you opt for one-on-one training or small group sessions.
Remember, this facility isn’t an open gym where anyone can come and go. It’s a personalized fitness environment where people on similar journeys can come together, find support, uplift and inspire one another, and improve their physical and mental fitness beyond what they thought possible.
